Article I >

We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

*Note that the text of the Constitution available on WeakleyReport.com includes the spelling of the original document, except for capitalized letters of key words the authors of the Constitution thought necessary to capitalize. No other editing has been done to the Constitution as you read it here. This has been done so that you may read it as it was originally written. Links are provided to amendments that have altered the document since ratification. Ratification became official with the ninth state, being that of New Hampshire, ratifying the Constitution on June 21, 1788. All thirteen original colonies that broke from the British Empire under the Articles of Confederation eventually ratified the Constitution; Rhode Island being the last to do so on May 29, 1790.
